…Needs N3m For ‘Hole in the heart’ Surgery!

The story of little David Adewale Oni is simple,  almost common. But the anguish, fears and helplessness of his parents are far from simple,  and certainly uncommon.

David will be 5 years old on June 8. And since he was 37 days old, the joy of the first-time parents (Oluwatosin & Abiodun) turned to sawdust when David was diagnosed with “hole in the heart” condition.

Unfortunately,  David’s dad, Abiodun is a tricycle operator (Keke NAPEP). And mother, Tosin a petty trader.  Life!!!

So for over 4 years, it has been a massive struggle keeping the boy alive with expensive drugs and tests, seeking funds for a corrective surgery in India (with several millions of naira)… in this harsh economic climate!

Here is where you and I come in… as angels of Hope.  We can help David Oni mend his heart and give his parents a lift in life. Last year, a Nigerian specialist hospital, Tristate Cardiovascular Associates (affiliated to Babcock University, Eruwon) offered to conduct the surgery and other logistics with at least N3m (instead of N5-7m needed for the Indian option).

So, we appeal on behalf of David Oni and his parents… Please join us to form a strong cord of palpable support that will bring succour, hope and love in saving this boy’s life. Be an Angel of Hope NOW!

You can send your donation to his dedicated account:- David Adewale Oni; UBA – Account/N:  2095550772 (Ogba, Lagos).

As usual, details of the funding and surgery processes will be updated regularly (on Angel of Hope section of http://www.rot0808.wordpress.com). Full details of his clinical report, test reports, etc also on this blog site.

Little David

A Clinical Report Prepared By Nigerian Specialist Medical Centre, Tristate Cardiovascular Associates

Clinical report – 13th July 2016

Name: David Oni, DOB: 8th June 2012.

“…I will summarize his medical history for our records. As you are aware, David is the only child of his parents who was delivered via normal vaginal delivery following an uncomplicated antenatal course of 40 weeks gestation. There were no immediate neonatal concerns.

He exhibited normal growth and development until 37 days of life when he developed a cough and symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection. He was taken to a private hospital and assessed where it was suspected that he may have a congenital cardiac defect. As a result, he was referred to LASUTH for further evaluation.

Scans of documents from Tristate Cardiovascular Associates

At LASUTH he was assessed by a paediatric cardiologist and diagnosed with a “hole in the heart” and surgical repair was advised. However, this has not been possible due to financial constraints.

David has continued to display satisfactory development but has been noted to tire easily, become cyanotic on moderate exertion and is unable to keep up with his peers. He is attending normal school and  is achieving satisfactory performance….”

(Update: David has not been regular in school as he is not always strong enough to cope – AoH)

Assessment and Plans

In summary, David is a 4-year old with  features suggestive of Tetralogy of Fallot, who is symptomatic and meets criteria for surgical repair.

I have explained the details of his diagnosis to his parents and they understand that surgical repair is required to relieve his symptoms, enable him to achieve adequate growth to reach his full potential and prevent right ventricular dysfunctional in the long term. Surgical repair will consist of patch closure of the VSD and relief of the right ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Given the benign appearance to his pulmonary valve today, I am confident that his operation should be able to avoid any damage to the pulmonary valve and any degree of significant residual pulmonary regurgitation.

Tristate Cardiovascular Associate has an unparalleled track record in performing this type of congenital cardiac surgery in Nigeria with a morbidity and mortality (<1%). The estimated cost of this operation is N2.5million, which covers the cost of the operation, ICU stay for 48hrs and inpatient care for five days there after. Additional costs may be incurred for any further pre- or post-operative investigations or procedures and any additional days beyond those stated above….”

Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi – BSc (Hons), PhD, MBBS, MRCP (London)
Adult Congenital & Structural Interventional Cardiologist
Tristate Cardiovascular Associates & Babcock University Teaching Hospital

(Update: Recent conversation with Dr. Majekodunmi revealed that fresh investigatory tests will have to be carried out on David to ascertain the current status, and therefore determine the current cost! These tests alone, we were told, would be close N100,000).

Angel of Hope has elected not to wait, but to kick start the fundraising activities so as to bring medical help to David as quickly as possible, and trust God to touch people who will be willing and able to successfully complete his medicare.

We look forward to giving regular updates on the funding milestones and medical timelines of David Oni. God bless you as you join in this assignment.
